Prïnceps step up on the scene with a mix of electronic genres and a rock dna

With a growing oeuvre on 152 Records, London based electro rock band Prïnceps is poised to do big things. While their repertoire is a fearless explorer of genre-spanning sonics, the duo’s latest offering “Saints” showcases yet another string to their bow: electronica/downtempo.

Prïnceps are a London based electronic rock duo consisting of singer Renz Byrne and bassist and producer Marko Press. The two have worked together for years, forming Prïnceps when their previous band split up in 2018. Their name is inspired by their mutual love of Ancient Rome (Press’s home city) and the video game ‘Rome: Total War’.

Described as a fusion of The Prodigy, Chemical Brothers, Bring Me The Horizon and The Used, Prïnceps’ influences range far and wide. They have covered a wide range of genres, the only common theme being that they must love the songs, as well as releasing their own original music. With their contrasting mix of high energy, positive dance music and nihilistic and dark lyrics, perhaps Prïnceps are the perfect band for this new age with its constantly changing landscape.

We talk to the duo about their career, musical influences, recording process and many more. Check it out the interview.

Where did the name “Princeps” come from?
The idea of our name comes from a video game that we used to play, a game about the Roman Empire.

Who are Princeps? And where are you from? What’s the backstory, how did you get together?
Prïnceps is an electronic rock band composed by Renz and I (Marko). We make sounds suitable to be consumed by most but that can be enjoyed by all.
We have known each other for several years now, we used to play together in another band in the past. When that band was splitting we decided to start a new adventure together, and here we are.

Where did the idea and inspiration to mix different musical genres in your compositions come from?
When we started this band we decided to be ready and open to see where we will be going without limiting the creative process. We just followed the flow and that’s the result we had: a mix of electronic genres with a rock dna.

Which three words would you use to describe your music?
Harmonious Anarchist Chaos

You continue to promote your latest release, the single “Saints” . How was the process of recording the single?
It was a short process. I (Marko) made the beat in a night and I had an idea for the melody. Just the time to write the lyrics and the song was done!

Their songs show a lot of intensity and delivery on the part of the duo. Is there any composition that is more special for you guys?
“Nostalgia” and “Today is a Day” are the ones. We wrote them during the lockdown, it was such an unusual and scary time…it wasn’t easy to organise a recording session. But at the end we delivered two intense songs that make us proud of our music project.

What bands and artistic sources inspire Princeps’ sound?
Bring Me The Horizon, The prodigy

Can we expect more new material soon?
Maybe, who knows. Creative skills have no rules.
