Damnation, we never liked genre categorization

After a very well received debut EP titled “Majesty in Degradation” released in 2021 on Pest Records, Hungarian Death Metal super-group DAMNATION are back with the first full-length material, “Fátum”
Recorded and mixed/mastered at Obsidian Sound Studio by Árpád Szenti “Fátum” evokes the most memorable era of Death Metal, in the vein of bands like Incantation, Morbid Angel or Gorefest and many more alike. The cover artwork is signed by Stan Ivan.
With lyrics contemplating on the mortality of the universe, enshrouded by a dark, dense musical atmosphere, “Fátum” is all about one of the earliest fears of humankind: existential angst set in a celestial scale.

Musicwebzine – Hi guys , who are Damnation ?
Péter –
Damnation are János Juhász and Bárány Tamás on guitars, Árpád Szenti on drums, Ádám Forczek vocals, and myself Péter Gáspár on bass.

Musicwebzine – Tell us about your latest release !
János –
The framework of the songs for this album was already done by me in 2021 when the EP came out. A 7-string LTD baritone guitar gave this new spectrum of sound, which is completely different from previous instruments. You have to approach playing this instrument in a different way. I made a bunch of gloomy, dark, medium-tempo, near robotic riffs thanks to this.
Árpád – I love this record, I am proud of it. It became such an honest death metal material, from which came mere brutality, power, and darkness. I really enjoy listening to it, and I don’t feel any sense of absence. The sound turned out just as I imagined. It starts as a merciless, unidentifiable machine that sucks the mind in.
Péter – The production of this album was hell of a ride. I enjoyed making it.

Musicwebzine – What’s your favorite song and why ?
János –
Antiverzum is my favorite from the album, it somehow stoos out to me, when it was made. It’s denser and stringier than the others.
Péter – I like all of them haha.
Árpád – Lennvilág and Az Idő Áramlatai are my favorite ones. I don’t want to choose between the two, which one I like better, It depends on my mood. These two songs contain a mystical atmosphere and depth that captures me the most. However every song has its favorite parts for me.

Musicwebzine – Which bands influenced your style ?
János –
Tiamat, Moonspell, Borknagar, Enslaved. If you ask death metal, then Morbid Angel, Napalm Death, Morgoth, but I could list more.
Péter – I usually take inspiration from a lot of genres, that I currently listen to.
Árpád – Marduk, Mayhem, Morbid Angel, Deicide, GIRE, Thy Catafalque, Fear Factory, My Dying Bride, Paradise Lost, Nightbringer, Emperor, Xasthur, Cradle Of Filth, Dark Funeral, Immortal, Immolation

Musicwebzine – How many stile we can listen in your music ?
János –
I think our music is blackened death metal, but I never liked genre categorization.
Péter – Pure old school death metal. It’s pretty obvious if you ask me haha.
Árpád – Old school death metal.

Musicwebzine – What about the cover ?
Péter –
It was made by a russian artist Stan Ivan, and the layout itself was designed by me. If you check the background of the lyrics carefully, the layers are parts of a bigger art.

Musicwebzine – How is the music scene in your country ?
János –
There are great and honest bands, full of brilliant musicians. If I have to give a few examples: I Bleed Lava, Attila Bakos, Beneath The Void ect.
Péter – The underground is pretty virulent in our country, and I am really happy about that. There are a lot of good bands who deserve more recognition.
Árpád – It’s very interconnected, but functional in the same time. It’s a really cohesive environment but you can’t generalize it completely.
